privileged

I already know this will be controversial, but doesn’t the saying go “If you don’t stand for something, you’ll fall for everything?”

I’ve always believed that white privilege was a thing (I still do). But not until recently, did I realize how big of a thing it truly is.

I’m listening to a book called The New Jim Crow. It’s eye opening and heart breaking. I can only listen to a little bit at a time before the statistics overwhelm and depress me so badly I have to turn it off.

That, my friends, is white privilege.

I can walk away from the statistics. I can take a break from the reality of that world and live in my whiteness. I get to choose when I will be uncomfortable and for how long.

Many people of color do not have that choice.

Many people of color live and experience those heart wrenching statistics on a daily basis.

Many people of color worry about their brother, son, father, or cousin becoming one of those statistics. They worry they will be part of the statistics themselves… the next hashtag.

I usually try to wrap up each post in a nice, pretty, little bow.

There’s nothing nice or pretty or little about the race inequalities in our current country..

It’s real. Acknowledge it. Educate yourself. And then do something to support the people of color in your life.

They deserve it.
